MLB Evening Slate Deep Dive for August 17

The lineup-aware evening board starts with McClanahan, Mlodzinski, and Valdez K unders, then builds around PHI, KC, NYM, ATL, and the Coors bats.

The evening slate now has enough lineup context to be more than a K-prop board. Some lineups are still missing, so this is not a “close your eyes and click every leg” kind of slate. Those are how a person ends up emotionally negotiating with a seventh hitter in the fifth inning. Nobody needs that.

The core stayed the same: McClanahan under, Mlodzinski under, and Valdez under are the cleanest strikeout calls. The deep-dive update adds stronger hitter paths around Philadelphia, Kansas City, the Mets, Atlanta, and Coors.

Lineups were confirmed for Tampa Bay, Miami, Philadelphia, Detroit, Pittsburgh, the Mets, Boston, Atlanta, Minnesota, Kansas City, the White Sox, and Colorado. The missing pieces: Baltimore, San Diego, Arizona, Oakland, the Cubs, the Dodgers, and both sides of STL-CIN Game 2.

BAL at TB (6:05 PM ET)

This is still the McClanahan under game. His ERA is fine, but the strikeout shape is not: three, three, three, five, four over the last five, with a shorter leash than you want from an over. Our model sits around 3.6 K, and plus money on the under is the first call.

Tampa's lineup makes contact, which helps the Young fade more than it creates a clean Young K prop. Yandy Diaz leading off and Junior Caminero batting third are the hitter checks if the app gives fair total-base prices.

Targets: McClanahan under 4.5 strikeouts; Yandy Diaz over 1.5 total bases; Caminero over 1.5 total bases; TB ML only as a builder add.

MIA at PHI (6:40 PM ET)

This is the biggest mismatch on the slate, but the main Sanchez line is no gift. Sanchez over 6.5 is live on talent and recent form, yet the price is doing plenty of work. The better strikeout swing is an alt 7.5 if the payout is real.

The Phillies bats are the cleaner entry. Schwarber gets Junk at Citizens Bank Park while leading off, and Bohm has the contact form to make a two-hit prop interesting. Arraez batting fourth is also very funny baseball behaviour, but he is not the target here.

Targets: PHI ML for builders; Sanchez over 7.5 alt Ks if priced fairly; Schwarber over 1.5 total bases; Bohm over 1.5 hits.

STL at CIN Game 2 (6:40 PM ET)

Andre Pallante and Rhett Lowder are the listed arms, but neither side had confirmed lineups in the deep-dive file. That keeps this out of the main card.

The total is high enough to make people curious, but without lineups and doubleheader bullpen clarity, this is a wait spot. Let another person be brave in the fog. Bravery is not a betting system.

Targets: Pass main K props and SGPs until lineups are confirmed.

DET at PIT (7:05 PM ET)

This is the K-under pocket. Mlodzinski under 2.5 is ugly in the way low-number unders are always ugly, but the recent form is thin once you stop letting one old 10-K game run the whole story. The model has him around 2.2.

Valdez under 5.5 is the chalkier partner. His recent K trend is down, and Pittsburgh's lineup has enough hot bats to make the game less about Valdez piling up strikeouts. The one catch is builder rules: both legs are from the same game.

Targets: Mlodzinski under 2.5 strikeouts; Valdez under 5.5 strikeouts; Rafael Flores Jr. over 1.5 total bases; under 8.5 only if you are comfortable tying both pitcher-under reads together.

SD at NYM (7:10 PM ET)

McLean is the better arm and the Mets are the cleaner side. The issue is that McLean's main K line is no longer a free square. He has the ceiling, but he also has a three-strikeout floor, so I prefer the alt route if the price is worth it.

The Mets bats are live against Buehler. Bichette and Jared Young are the first checks, with Lindor as the power pivot. San Diego's lineup was still missing, so I would not get too heroic with a full game script.

Targets: NYM ML; Bichette over 1.5 total bases; Jared Young over 1.5 hits; McLean over 6.5 alt Ks if priced fairly.

AZ at BOS (7:10 PM ET)

Boston has the confirmed lineup and Arizona did not in the deep-dive file. Gamboa looks like an opener or short-leash arm, which makes pitcher props messy but helps explain why Boston side/bats are more interesting than the K board.

The Boston power checks are Willson Contreras and Wilyer Abreu against Mitch Bratt. It is still a lineup-and-price game, especially with a light weather monitor.

Targets: BOS ML; Contreras over 1.5 total bases; Abreu over 1.5 total bases; pass pitcher Ks.

ATL at MIN (7:40 PM ET)

Atlanta remains one of the better builder sides. Perez is a contact manager, Ober gives up power, and Minnesota's bottom half is cold enough that the Braves have the cleaner path.

Olson is the obvious total-base target against an arm that can give up home runs. Harris is the secondary TB look, and Perez under 3.5 K is a quieter leg if you want another under that matches the contact-manager profile.

Targets: ATL ML; Olson over 1.5 total bases; Perez under 3.5 strikeouts; Harris over 1.5 total bases.

ATH at KC (7:40 PM ET)

Kansas City is one of the better stack spots because Barnett is the weakest listed starter on the slate. This is less about a spicy model angle and more about a bad pitcher facing a lineup with enough form near the top.

Witt, Caglianone, and Massey are the prop checks. KC ML is useful, but the price is heavier than the hitter props should be.

Targets: KC ML for builders; Caglianone over 1.5 total bases; Massey over 1.5 hits; Bobby Witt Jr. over 1.5 total bases.

CWS at CHC (8:05 PM ET)

Castillo's over 4.5 remains a positive but lower-priority K leg. He is trending up, and the Cubs carry enough swing-and-miss to keep it interesting. Imanaga, meanwhile, gives up power, which makes the White Sox bats more fun than that sentence usually is.

Murakami and Vargas are the power checks. The weather is cold at Wrigley, so I am not ignoring the run-suppression side, but the matchup still gives both bats real upside.

Targets: Castillo over 4.5 strikeouts; Vargas over 1.5 total bases; Murakami over 1.5 total bases; over 8.5 only if the Cubs lineup confirms enough thump.

LAD at COL (8:40 PM ET)

Coors is the late hammer, but the Dodgers lineup was still missing in the source. Once it posts, Ohtani against Sugano is the first hitter check. Sugano's home-run profile at Coors is exactly the kind of thing that gets a total-base prop into the group chat.

Snell still has the workload gate. If he is cleared, the alt K ceiling is real. If not, this becomes more bats and fewer pitcher fantasies.

Targets: Ohtani over 2.5 total bases if in the lineup; over 11.0 if the Dodgers lineup is full strength; Sugano under 2.5 strikeouts; Goodman over 1.5 total bases; Snell alt Ks only with a confirmed workload.

Slate Shortlist

First strikeout checks: McClanahan under 4.5, Mlodzinski under 2.5, Valdez under 5.5, Perez under 3.5, Sugano under 2.5.

Best alt K ceiling checks: Sanchez over 7.5, McLean over 6.5, Castillo over 5.5.

Hit and total-base props to check first: Schwarber TB, Bohm hits, Yandy Diaz TB, Caminero TB, Bichette TB, Jared Young hits, Olson TB, Caglianone TB, Witt TB, Ohtani TB.

Builds that make the most sense on first pass: PHI, KC, NYM, ATL, and LAD-COL once the Dodgers lineup posts.

Availability Gates

Before lock, verify the missing lineups: Baltimore, San Diego, Arizona, Oakland, the Cubs, the Dodgers, and STL-CIN Game 2. Also check alt K pricing and whether the boost builder allows multiple legs from the same game.

Snell still needs a workload note. Sanchez and McLean are better as alt-ceiling checks than main-line overs at the current prices. The board has plenty of paths; the trick is not turning all of them into one beautiful 14-leg spreadsheet accident.
