Very Early NFL Week 1 Notes: Numbers to Re-Check

A research-only Week 1 board with Saints +7, Titans -2.5, Dolphins +3.5, Giants +2.5, Broncos +3, and the Niners/Rams under on the re-check list.

This is a Week 1 research board, not a card. The numbers worth re-checking are useful, but the stale-market caveat is doing real work here. Week 1 loves making confident people look silly, and frankly it does not need my help.

Prices, availability, and weather still need a final check before lock. That is the boring sentence that keeps the rest of this honest.

NE at SEA (Wed Sep 9, 8:20 PM ET)

Our model basically agrees with the market here. Seahawks by 3, market says 3.5. Nothing to see. The total is a perfect match at 44.0. This is the kind of game where the model and market are looking at the same numbers and shrugging.

Our model: Home margin +3.0, total 44.0. Spread edge 0.5, total edge 0.0. Both Pass. The main risk: No real angle to break. If anything, a Week 1 QB surprise could flip this, but the model isn't telling you to play it anyway. Before doing anything brave, prices need a fresh check. No injury data. No lineup confirmation.

Targets: Pass. Model and market agree - no edge worth chasing.

SF at LA Rams (Thu Sep 10, 8:35 PM ET)

Model has the Rams favoured by 4.6 at home with a high total of 52.8. Without a market line, we can't tell if there's an edge or if the market already agrees. This is almost certainly the same game as SF@LAR (entry #19 below), which does have market lines and shows a massive edge. Check the LAR entry for the playable angle.

Our model: Home margin +4.6, total 52.8. epa-ratings-v2. Cannot compute edge - no market. The main risk: No market = no target. The real risk is not knowing what the line is. Before doing anything brave, prices need a fresh check. Game ID likely duplicates SF@LAR. Verify which game ID maps to the actual Week 1 matchup.

Targets: Pass - no market. See SF@LAR (entry #19) for the actual angle on this matchup.

ATL at PIT (Sun Sep 13, 1:00 PM ET)

Market is giving Pittsburgh 3 points at home. Our model says this is closer to a pick'em - Steelers by less than a point. That's a meaningful disagreement but not quite scout-tier. The total is a shade higher than market (43.2 vs 42.0) but nothing exciting. The interesting side is ATL +3 if you can get it, because the model doesn't buy Pittsburgh as a field-goal favourite.

Our model: Home margin +0.9, total 43.2. Spread edge 2.1 (Watch), total edge 1.2 (Pass). The main risk: Week 1 opener for both teams. No injury data to check. If Pittsburgh's defence is healthier than expected or Atlanta's QB situation is unsettled, the market number could be right. Before doing anything brave, prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check.

Targets: Watch ATL +3.0 if line holds. Not scout-tier - need the edge to widen or news to confirm.

BAL at IND (Sun Sep 13, 1:00 PM ET)

Market has Baltimore laying 3.5 on the road. Our model agrees with the direction - it has the Ravens by 4.8 - and even thinks the market is slightly conservative. But 1.3 points of edge on a road favourite isn't enough to get excited about. Total is basically a wash.

Our model: Home margin -4.8, total 48.1. Spread edge 1.3 (Pass), total edge 0.4 (Pass). The main risk: Ravens on the road in Week 1 always carry some risk. No injury data to check whether Lamar or key defenders are fully healthy. Before doing anything brave, prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed.

Targets: Pass. Model agrees with market direction but edge is too thin.

BUF at HOU (Sun Sep 13, 1:00 PM ET)

Market calls this essentially a coin flip with Buffalo getting 1. Our model actually has Houston favoured by 1.2 - so it slightly disagrees with the market's lean toward BUF. The edge is on the Houston side (model says HOU should be favoured, market has them as a 1-point dog). Not scout-tier, but worth noting if you like the Texans at home in Week 1.

Our model: Home margin -1.2, total 45.7. Spread edge 2.2 (Watch), total edge 1.2 (Pass). The main risk: No injury data. If Stroud or Allen has any Week 1 question marks, this line moves fast. Before doing anything brave, prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check.

Targets: Watch HOU -1.0 (or better). Model leans Texans but edge is below scout threshold.

CHI at CAR (Sun Sep 13, 1:00 PM ET)

Market has Chicago favoured by 2.5. Our model says 1.9 - same direction, slightly less conviction. Total is a perfect match. Nothing here. Move on.

Our model: Home margin -1.9, total 46.0. Spread edge 0.6 (Pass), total edge 0.0 (Pass). Before doing anything brave, prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed.

Targets: Pass. Model and market agree.

CLE at JAX (Sun Sep 13, 1:00 PM ET)

Market has Jacksonville favoured by 7.5 at home. Our model is even more aggressive - it has the Jags by 10.1. That's the same direction as the market, so the edge is on JAX -7.5 (model says the line should be higher). On the total, model is at 42.0 vs market 40.5, leaning Over. Neither edge hits scout tier but both are watchlist material. If you like the Jags, the model says the market is underpricing them.

Our model: Home margin +10.1, total 42.0. Spread edge 2.6 (Watch), total edge 1.5 (Watch). The main risk: Cleveland is a wild card. No injury data - if the Browns' QB or OL situation is worse than expected, the model's 10.1 could be light. If Cleveland is healthier, the market's 7.5 is closer. Before doing anything brave, prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check.

Targets: Watch JAX -7.5 and Over 40.5. Both edges are sub-scout but same direction as market.

NO at DET (Sun Sep 13, 1:00 PM ET)

This is the biggest spread edge on the slate. Market has Detroit favoured by 7 at home. Our model says this is a near-pick'em - Detroit by 0.4. That's a 6.6-point disagreement, which is enormous. Either our model is drastically underrating the Lions at home, or the market is pricing in a narrative (Detroit as Super Bowl contender, primetime halo) that the numbers don't support. The total is basically in agreement, so the model isn't just being contrarian for fun - it genuinely thinks these teams are close.

Our model: Home margin +0.4, total 48.2. Spread edge 6.6 (Scout ), total edge 0.8 (Pass). The main risk: This is Week 1. If Detroit's roster is healthier or better than what last season's EPA data captures (offseason moves, coaching changes, draft picks), the model could be behind. Also, if the market has already moved off 7 - remember, these lines are from Aug 11. Check the live number. Before doing anything brave, Prices need a fresh check. Must verify NO +7.0 is still available. injury reports need a fresh check for either team. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check. This is the top edge on the board - it needs every gate cleared before it becomes real.

Targets: Scout NO +7.0 - biggest spread edge on the slate (6.6). Verify the line is still 7. Clear injury/lineup gates before considering staking (preseason policy: research only).

NYJ at TEN (Sun Sep 13, 1:00 PM ET)

Market has this as a close game - Tennessee favoured by 2.5. Our model says the Titans should be favoured by 5.8, and the total should be 3 points higher. Both edges clear scout threshold. The model likes Tennessee to win by nearly a touchdown and thinks there are more points in this game than the market expects. If you trust the model, TEN -2.5 and Over 39.5 are both playable. The combined edge (6.3) makes this one of the more interesting games on the slate.

Our model: Home margin +5.8, total 42.5. Spread edge 3.3 (Scout ), total edge 3.0 (Scout ). The main risk: Week 1 QB uncertainty for either team could swing this. If the Jets' offensive line or QB situation is better than the model thinks, TEN -2.5 gets dicey. No injury data to check. Before doing anything brave, Prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check. Verify TEN -2.5 and total 39.5 still available.

Targets: Scout TEN -2.5 (edge 3.3) and Over 39.5 (edge 3.0). Combined edge 6.3 - one of the strongest two-way signals on the slate.

TB at CIN (Sun Sep 13, 1:00 PM ET)

Market has Cincinnati favoured by 3.5 at home. Our model is more bullish on the Bengals - 5.0 - but the 1.5 edge is just watchlist territory. The more interesting angle is the total: market says 51.5, model says 49.4. That's a 2.1-point lean toward the Under. Not scout-tier, but if you're looking at a Bengals win and a lower-scoring game, the model supports both.

Our model: Home margin +5.0, total 49.4. Spread edge 1.5 (Watch), total edge 2.1 (Watch). The main risk: No injury data. If Burrow's health status is uncertain, the total and spread both shift. Cincy offensive weapons are elite when healthy - if the market is pricing in full health and the model is using last year's data, the under could be wrong. Before doing anything brave, prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check (especially Burrow). lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check.

Targets: Watch CIN -3.5 and Under 51.5. Both sub-scout but aligned. Need Burrow health confirmation before upgrading.

ARI at LAC (Sun Sep 13, 4:25 PM ET)

Market has the Chargers favoured by 10.5. Our model says 9.1 - same direction, slightly less. Total is a touch higher (47.5 vs 46.5). Neither edge is worth chasing. The model agrees LAC wins big; it just doesn't think it's quite as big as the market says. Not enough to play.

Our model: Home margin +9.1, total 47.5. Spread edge 1.4 (Pass), total edge 1.0 (Pass). Before doing anything brave, prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed.

Targets: Pass. Model agrees with market direction, edge too thin.

GB at MIN (Sun Sep 13, 4:25 PM ET)

Another game where the model and market are basically looking at each other. Minnesota favoured by ~1, market says 1.5. Total nearly identical. No edge, no angle. NFC North divisional game in Week 1 - could go either way, and the model isn't telling you which way.

Our model: Home margin +0.9, total 44.1. Spread edge 0.6 (Pass), total edge 0.9 (Pass). Before doing anything brave, prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check (dome game, weather less relevant).

Targets: Pass. Model and market agree.

MIA at LV (Sun Sep 13, 4:25 PM ET)

Third-biggest spread edge on the slate. Market has Miami getting 3.5 points. Our model says Las Vegas should be favoured by 2 - that's a full 5.5-point flip in the opposite direction. The model doesn't just think Miami covers; it thinks the Raiders win outright. That's a strong contrarian signal. On the total, the model is at 43.0 vs market 40.5, leaning Over by 2.5 (watchlist). If the model is right about LV winning, a higher-scoring game makes sense too. But a 5.5-point spread disagreement in Week 1 is either a massive edge or a model that's missing offseason context on Miami.

Our model: Home margin -2.0, total 43.0. Spread edge 5.5 (Scout ), total edge 2.5 (Watch). The main risk: This is the kind of edge that demands a news check. If Miami has a new QB, new coach, major injuries, or roster changes that the model (using last season's EPA data) hasn't picked up, the market could be right. Week 1 is exactly when the model is most vulnerable to offseason moves it can't see. Before doing anything brave, Prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check (Vegas dome, less relevant). This is a top-3 edge - needs full news/injury clearance before it's real.

Targets: Scout MIA +3.5 (edge 5.5) and watch Over 40.5 (edge 2.5). Contrarian signal - verify Miami offseason context (QB, coaching, roster) before trusting.

WAS at PHI (Sun Sep 13, 4:25 PM ET)

Market has Philadelphia favoured by 4.5 at home. Our model says 7.8 - the Eagles should be a touchdown favourite. That's a 3.3-point edge, clearing scout. The model also likes the Under (44.5 vs 47.0, 2.5-point edge). So the read is: Philly wins bigger than the market thinks, and the game is lower-scoring than expected. That combination suggests the model expects the Eagles' defence to dominate. Divisional rivalry in Week 1 adds volatility, but the model is clear.

Our model: Home margin +7.8, total 44.5. Spread edge 3.3 (Scout ), total edge 2.5 (Watch). The main risk: Divisional games are always tricky. Washington could be better than last year's EPA suggests (rookie QB, new coaching, draft capital). If the Commanders' offence has improved, the model's 7.8 is too high and the Under is at risk. Before doing anything brave, Prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check. Verify PHI -4.5 and total 47.0 still available. Check Washington QB/roster situation.

Targets: Scout PHI -4.5 (edge 3.3). Watch Under 47.0 (edge 2.5). Combined edge 5.8 - strong two-way signal.

DAL at NYG (Sun Sep 13, 8:20 PM ET)

Market has Dallas as a 2.5-point road favourite. Our model says the Giants should actually be favoured by 2.0 at home. That's a 4.5-point disagreement - the model not only thinks Dallas doesn't cover, it thinks New York wins outright. Fourth-biggest spread edge on the slate. Total is basically a wash. Sunday night, divisional rivalry, the model is calling for a Giants upset. That's either a great contrarian call or the model overrating the Giants' offseason.

Our model: Home margin +2.0, total 49.2. Spread edge 4.5 (Scout ), total edge 0.7 (Pass). The main risk: NFC East rivalry, primetime. These games are unpredictable. If Dallas's roster is stronger than the model captures (free agency, draft, health), the market's 2.5 is fine. Also, primetime narratives can move lines - the market might be adjusting for Dallas's brand value. Before doing anything brave, Prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check for either team. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check. Primetime game - line could move with public money. Verify NYG +2.5 still available.

Targets: Scout NYG +2.5 (edge 4.5). Model calls for Giants outright. Verify both teams' rosters and health before upgrading.

DEN at KC (Mon Sep 14, 8:15 PM ET)

Market has Kansas City favoured by 3 at home on Monday night. Our model says this is basically a coin flip - KC by 0.5. That's a 3.5-point edge toward Denver covering. The model also likes the Under (40.7 vs 43.0, 2.3-point edge). So the read is: closer game than the market thinks, and lower-scoring. The combination suggests the model expects KC's offence to be less explosive than the market assumes, or Denver's defence to keep it tight. Either way, DEN +3 and Under 43 are the model's preferred angles.

Our model: Home margin -0.5, total 40.7. Spread edge 3.5 (Scout ), total edge 2.3 (Watch). The main risk: It's Kansas City at home on Monday night. The market could be pricing in the Mahomes/home-field premium that the model doesn't fully capture. If KC's offence is clicking in Week 1, the 3-point spread looks small and the Under is in trouble. Before doing anything brave, Prices need a fresh check. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check. Monday night - line may move with weekend action. Verify DEN +3.0 and total 43.0 still available.

Targets: Scout DEN +3.0 (edge 3.5). Watch Under 43.0 (edge 2.3). Combined edge 5.8. Monday night game - check KC offensive health and Denver defensive offseason moves.

BAL at KC (Time TBA)

No market to compare against. The baseline model has KC favoured by 1.8 with a total of 49.2, which feels reasonable for a Ravens-Chiefs matchup. But this is the fallback model, not epa-ratings-v2, so the projection carries less weight. Without market lines, there's no edge to calculate and no angle to play.

Our model: Home margin +1.8, total 49.2. baseline-v0 (fallback model - lower confidence). The main risk: No market, no angle, nothing to break. The risk is in treating the baseline model's projection as gospel when it's a simplified fallback. Before doing anything brave, Prices need a fresh check. Baseline-v0 model (not epa-ratings-v2). Kickoff time TBA. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed.

Targets: Pass - no market and baseline model. Re-check if lines appear and model is upgraded.

DET at GB (Time TBA)

Market has Green Bay as a 2.5-point home favourite. Our model says this is nearly even - GB by 0.7. That's a 3.2-point edge toward Detroit covering. The model also leans Under (45.1 vs 47.5, 2.4-point edge). Both edges clear watch, the spread clears scout. But this is the baseline model, not epa-ratings-v2, so we're less confident in the numbers. Still, the direction is interesting: the model doesn't buy Green Bay as a FG favourite at home against Detroit.

Our model: Home margin -0.7, total 45.1. Spread edge 3.2 (Scout ), total edge 2.4 (Watch). baseline-v0 (fallback model). The main risk: Baseline model means lower trust. NFC North rivalry - always volatile. If Detroit's offseason moves (the same ones that might explain the NO@DET edge) have improved the roster, the model could be right. If GB is better than last year's data suggests, the market is fine. Before doing anything brave, Baseline-v0 model - not full epa-ratings-v2. Lower confidence. Kickoff time TBA. injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check.

Targets: Scout DET +2.5 (edge 3.2, but baseline model - reduced confidence). Watch Under 47.5 (edge 2.4). Verify with full model when available.

SF at LAR (Time TBA)

This is the best combined edge on the entire slate. Market has the Rams favoured by 3.5 at home. Our model says San Francisco should be favoured by 2.2 - a 5.7-point flip. On the total, market says 48.5, model says 43.4 - a 5.1-point lean toward the Under. Combined edge of 10.8 is the highest on the board. The model is calling for a lower-scoring game where the 49ers win outright. That's a strong contrarian signal on both sides. However: this is the baseline-v0 model, not epa-ratings-v2, so confidence is reduced. And this is likely the same game as the SF@LA entry (#2) which had no market - the duplicate needs resolving.

Our model: Home margin -2.2, total 43.4. Spread edge 5.7 (Scout ), total edge 5.1 (Scout ). baseline-v0 (fallback model). The main risk: Baseline model means we're working with less sophisticated projections. If the 49ers have major offseason changes (coaching, QB, roster turnover) that the baseline model doesn't capture, the 5.7-point spread edge could evaporate. The Under at 5.1 points is huge - it suggests the model expects a defensive struggle, which could be wrong if either offence has improved. Also, this might be a placeholder game - verify the matchup is real and not a data artifact. Before doing anything brave, Baseline-v0 model - not full epa-ratings-v2. Significantly reduced confidence. Kickoff time TBA. Possible duplicate with SF@LA (entry #2). injury reports need a fresh check. lineups are not confirmed. weather needs a fresh check. This is the top combined edge on the..

Targets: Scout SF +3.5 (edge 5.7) and Under 48.5 (edge 5.1) - but baseline model. Combined edge 10.8 is the best on the board. Verify matchup is real, upgrade to epa-ratings-v2, and clear all news gates before considering.
